Title: The First Cup in the Morning
Medium: Charcoal and Conté
Year: 2011
Size: 30 x 45 cm
My intent for this charcoal work was to create a photo-realistic interpretation of this reference picture (add link) using lots of blending technique to create various tones and values.  I aimed to show off a high contrast of light and dark by playing with the shadows in the picture.

To start off the production process, I searched the internet to find various black and white pictures that showed off unique, contrasted shadows.  I chose this cup of coffee, as I myself am a coffee-drinker and function better with a cup of morning coffee.  I then used charcoal and conté to create the varying values that make up the image.

Some challenges and difficulties I had with this image were blending the charcoal in small areas.  I have large fingers, so it was difficult to do so.  I also had a hard time using the charcoal and conté to add in fine details.

I was inspired by great charcoal drawings I had seen in the past, and strived to make this as realistic and detailed as those that I have seen.  We were also told to reflect and be motivated by ourselves for this project when it came to the subject matter.  This is how the cup of coffee tied in, as I truly enjoy a lovely cup of coffee each morning.

If I could do this again differently I would bring some water and paper towel up with me so I could clean my hands off whenever they get too smudged.  This would prevent mistakes and make my image look more precise and less smudgey.

I am somewhat satisfied with this piece.  I believe that from far away, it looks great.  But up close, I see all the smudges, the roughness, and the lack of details I added in, making me wish I could change the amount of effort I put into it.
